Project Summary

What I learned from this project is that sometimes when you are making something it is all about the material, you can have an amazing idea but if the material does not move like that then your idea needs to adapt to the material. Also I learned that duality can be crucial to what an object looks like and why it was created to look that way.  Another thing that I learned from this project is that creating models and experimenting with the materials and your ideas before you create the real version is crucial to the success of the final project.
There were quite a few aspects of this project that were challenging, the first was the time, I felt like we went super fast on this project so I felt that I did not have as much time as I would have liked to experiment with the models. The next challenge that I faced was with the material, I felt like I had these great ideas and then the cardboard would not move the way that I needed it to move and so I had to change my idea. The next part was the restrictions, for both of the exercises I wanted to use adhesive because I felt that there were a couple of places that just needed a touch of glue or tape but we could not use any adhesives so I had to adapt my design to fit that restriction.
The only thing that I would change about this project is that I would have done more experimenting on my exercise 2 chair because when I went from my small cardboard model to my large model there were a lot of structural problems that I did not have on the little one. Also I would have bough more cardboard so that I could have created more support on the inside so that it could actually hold me up. The last thing that I would have changed about my exercise 2 chair is that I wish that I would have taken more time measuring out the lines to make sure that they were perfect and that they all fitted together perfectly because some of them didn’t and then I had structure problems.
Overall I really liked the concept of this project and I think that the drawing at the end did help wrap the project up. I also liked that there were some limitations on the creation of the project because then it didn’t let go overboard with my design. The last thing that I loved about this project was that I got to tie in someone that I love very much into the project very much and it was fun designing to our relationship.

Kendall Buster

My initial response to Busters work is that it is very futuristic and interesting. I can’t seem to stop looking at it because every way that I look at it I find something new and interesting. I love the circular shapes that he creates and I love that the material is see through so that no matter what you can tell what is on the inside of the object. I like that this is an object that can be used for a purpose and at the same time it could be just for show as well which makes it intriguing with in its self. The material s so shear and it looks so delicate with the mix of the circle shapes and using the white material, the entire shape gives off a delicate view to it. With the fact that all of his pieces vary in size, the interaction that the viewer has with the object is going to be different, because if it is big and on the ground you are going to see all of the sides and maybe the inside, but if it is hanging from the ceiling and it is medium in size the viewer is going to be looking at it from the bottom, the inside and maybe the sides. The texture that is presented with these objects is that the inside structure shows through the material which makes the fabric rough in texture but also it ads visual texture because it is a white texture and the you see the black wire lines. I would love to own any of his pieces just because they are so interesting but gentle and beautiful.

The fist thing that I noticed when looking at his work is that there is no active function to the objects; they are more for viewing purposes. As I was looking more and more at the artwork I realized that it looks like he has a story behind every piece of his work. All of the objects seem to be created so that every angle and every line is put there for a reason or every piece is created either with more material to describe how in depth his meaning is to his work. I personally think that his work is beautiful, very detailed and very intriguing when you look at it. All of his materials seem to be organic materials like wood and metals, but the way that he turns these organic materials in to inorganic shapes that I find very interesting to the eye. His shapes range from very big bulky shapes to single stranded materials empty shapes but they are all inorganic which ties them together. I noticed that he does a lot of weaving and when I saw the objects that had weaving I thought that they looked a lot like baskets. Then the shapes that are made from a metal material and are shaped like a circle can be related to because it is a common shape that everyone knows but there are changes in the material; or the color that catches the viewers eye. One thing that I thought of is that a lot of the bulky objects and the one ladder piece, they are big enough that the viewer is going to have to react to the object with their whole body and not just with their eyes. Overall with his work I love that you can tell how much work he put into it and all of the detail is really amazing to look at.

Exercise 2 Description

In exercise 2 we were suppose to take all of the structural ideas that we learned about from exercise 1 and bring in the idea of duality (our relationship with someone.) We are supposed to create the chair based on the relationship that we have with someone, that is once again sit-able. This time we could use as much cardboard as we wished and we could cut the cardboard apart but once again we could not use any adhesive to hold it together. This time we used cardboard to create our model so that we knew how it would bend and then we moved to the 4x8 sheets of cardboard. Also the seat did have to hold us up when we were sitting on it but the main focus was on the design and the relationship that we had with the person that we wrote our essay on.

Exercise 1 Description

For this first exercise we had one piece of 4x4 cardboard and out of that cardboard we had to make a chair that we can sit on. The restraints are, we have to use all of the cardboard and we can cut the cardboard but you cannot cut it off.  The key to making this chair work is starting with a paper model that is strong enough to hold an object, and then you have to transfer it to the cardboard. The problem with transferring the model to the cardboard is that it does not bend and fold the way that the paper does. Then there is also the problem of making it sit-able, just because the support worked on the model it doesn’t mean that the cardboard is going to hold up a whole person. Overall it was all about structure and not as much about style.
